THE GOOD FIND GUIDE

Before You Buy More Storage, Measure These Three Things

The best-looking organizer is less useful when the drawer will not close. Here is a quick way to check the fit.

An organizer can look tiny in one photo and huge in another. A few measurements make shopping much easier—and help you avoid buying storage for things you no longer need.

1. The space it will occupy

Measure the inside width, depth and height of the drawer, cupboard or shelf. Check the narrowest point, including hinges, handles and curved corners. If you are measuring a drawer, use the inside dimensions rather than the outside of the furniture.

For a wall-mounted item, mark its outline with removable paper before choosing. Check that the door or nearby cabinet can still open. Read the installation requirements for the exact wall surface; an adhesive mount and a drilled mount are different jobs.

2. The things it will hold

Sort the items first. Group the things you reach for together and measure the largest item in each group. Product capacity descriptions such as “large” or “multi-use” are less helpful than the dimensions of each compartment. Leave enough room to lift items out without emptying the whole organizer.

3. The clearance it needs

A box may fit perfectly until you open its lid. A pull-out drawer needs space in front. A tall bottle may stop a cupboard door from closing. Imagine the organizer in use, not just sitting on a shelf.

Try the layout before ordering

Use paper cutouts or an empty box to test the footprint. Then compare the materials, cleaning instructions and mounting method. Check whether screws, adhesive strips or other fittings are included.

One last question: does this give your most-used things an easier home? If the answer is yes and the measurements work, you have a useful starting point.
